J007-INDONESIA CONTROLES AEROPUERTOS VIRUS NIPAH
STORY: Indonesia began running thermal scanners at its major airports, including on the resort island of Bali, on Wednesday (January 28), following an outbreak of the Nipah virus in India.
At least 5.89 million foreign tourists visited Bali last year, according to the island's statistics bureau, including those from India.
Speaking to Reuters, one tourist said vigilance is necessary given the experience with the COVID-19 pandemic, while another said the Nipah virus posed "less risk".
The virus, which is carried by fruit bats and animals such as pigs, can cause fever and brain inflammation and has a fatality rate of between 40% and 75%. Although it can spread from person to person, transmission is not easy and typically requires prolonged contact with an infected individual.
