VIDEO SHOWS: DRONE FOOTAGE OF FLOODED HOUSES / RESIDENTS PADDLING THE STREETS ON BOATS / SOUNDBITES FROM RESIDENT, OFFICIALS
STORY: Drone footage captured the scale of flooding in southern Chile this past week, after a series of weather fronts caused rivers to overflow. Successive weather fronts have battered the southern Biobío region since July, causing rivers to overflow. Disaster prevention agency SENAPRED issued an alert on Saturday (August 1) over the risk of rising water levels in the Curanilahue and Rana rivers and the Plegarias estuary. SENAPRED also kept a yellow alert in place on Wednesday (August 5) due to rising levels at the Ralco reservoir, adding that a preventive, gradual discharge had begun after the reservoir reached 724.60 meters above sea level. The agency said a new front was expected to hit Biobío on Wednesday, bringing moderate to heavy rain, with rainfall totals of up to 50 millimeters. Authorities urged residents to stay away from rivers, streams and other watercourses. (Editing: Jorge Vega. Writing: Anna Portella. Production: Anna Portella)

In fact, the stations downstream from the power plants are below the blue threshold, except for Biobio at its mouth."
