STORY: A Russian drone nearly hit a Ukrainian nationalist monument in the western city of Lviv, mayor Andriy Sadovyi said on Thursday (January 15) on social media.

Sadoviy said on various social media the drone "fell" on a playground next to the statue of Ukrainian nationalist Stepan Bandera, and that the shockwave of the explosion hit a communal worker clearing snow.

Reuters was able to confirm the location by the monument, buildings, playground structure, and trees which matched file and satellite imagery. Reuters was not able to confirm the date of footage, however aftermath footage taken by Reuters confirmed damage in the area. Lviv regional Governor Maksym Kozytskyi said in a Telegram statement on January 15 that there was an attack near Stepan Bandera Monument in Lviv.

Stepan Bandera was the most prominent figure in a group associated with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) which fought Soviet forces in World War Two, whose ranks swelled to 100,000 by 1944, according to historical accounts, and continued fighting Moscow's rule until the mid-1950s.

Moscow still invokes Bandera's name to underpin its assertions that it invaded Ukraine in February 2022 to "denazify" the country, pointing to the fact that some nationalists initially cooperated with German forces in their battle against the Russians - though they later also fought the Nazis.
