The valleys of Nepal's Rasuwa district were scarred by mud after catastrophic flash floods left nearly 1,500 missing, including almost 800 foreigners, across Nepal and China's Tibet, authorities said on Thursday (August 27).

Aerial footage shows the scale of the destruction — vehicles damaged and stretches of landscape buried by mud. Reuters was able to verify the location and date of the video by metadata on the original file. Buildings matched satellite imagery of the area. Terrain, mountains and river seen in the video also matched topography mapping.

Rescuers in Nepal used helicopters to search for survivors and drop emergency supplies to thousands cut off after Wednesday's (August 26) disaster swept a rugged mountainous region thronged by trekkers and pilgrims linking Lhasa in Tibet with Nepal's capital of Kathmandu.

Police said they expected the death toll to rise beyond 165.
