Tens of thousands of Argentina fans gathered at the Obelisk on Wednesday night (July 15), the Argentine capital's traditional celebration point, waving flags, singing, setting off fireworks and climbing onto traffic lights and bus stops after the final whistle.

Argentina fan Tomas Benjamin Limach said the team had played its best match of the tournament and had shown they were ready to become champions again.

Fan Francisco Bauza said Argentina's run to three finals in four World Cups showed the team gave everything.

Argentina, the defending world champion, was set to face Spain on Sunday in New Jersey, while England was due to play France for third place on Saturday in Miami.
