Eleven people were injured, and several buildings in the centre of Russian-controlled Donetsk were severely damaged on Wednesday (August 26) in a missile attack blamed by local officials on Ukraine.

Denis Pushilin, the Russian installed head of the Donetsk region, said in a statement that eight apartment buildings and 11 civilian infrastructure sites were damaged, among them a large shopping mall. The mall had been targeted with Storm Shadow missiles, Pushilin said.

Reuters could not interdependently verify the claims on the type of weapons used.

Reuters footage from the scene shows a large building almost entirely destroyed in a central district of Donetsk as well as damage to a nearby boulevard in the city centre.

An official from Russia's Investigative Committee said fragments of munitions recovered from the scene would be sent for forensic examination.

There was no immediate reaction from Kyiv.

Donetsk region, is one of four regions of Ukraine that Russia partly occupies and claimed as its own in 2022 in a move condemned as illegal by Ukraine and most countries at the United Nations General Assembly.
