Eyewitness video shot on Wednesday (July 29) captured strong gales blowing dust across the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro and trees rocking in the wind.

Reuters was able to confirm the location from the road layout, surrounding vegetation, water features, markings on pavement, and a nearby building, which matched with satellite and archive imagery. The location was further verified by the metadata on the original video file. The Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, posted a statement on Facebook on July 29 about strong winds in all regions of Rio with reports of fallen trees and impact on electricity supply throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The mayor also warned against non-essential travel in a post on his Facebook page.
