J004-HONDURAS ASFURA GANA ELECCIONES
Supporters of Honduras' National Party celebrated after the National Electoral Council announced Nasry Asfura as the country's president-elect, amid delays and ongoing claims of irregularities from opposition candidate Salvador Nasralla on Wednesday (December 24).
Scenes from the capital showed National Party supporters rejoicing following the results, which marked a victory for the conservative party and its leader. Addressing the party supporters, National Party spokesperson Maria Antonieta Mejia emphasized unity among members and called for reconciliation within the country.
Meanwhile, Liberal Party contender Salvador Nasralla rejected the results in a press conference. While he vowed not to accept what he described as a flawed process, Nasralla urged his supporters to avoid confrontation.
The electoral authority, known as the CNE, said Asfura had won 40.3% of the vote, edging out center-right Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla who garnered 39.5%.
Results were so tight and the ballot processing system so chaotic that around 15% of the tally sheets comprising hundreds of thousands of ballots had to be counted by hand to determine the winner.

"It's not over until it's over. Today we have gratitude, but above all with humility. The differences we may have as a party are normal in a democracy, but today we call on all brothers who participated in this competition to unite, to build in unity, but above all in love for Honduras so that we can build the Honduras that we all deserve."

"I will not accept a result built on omissions. That is not my way of life. Accepting that would be betraying the trust of those who voted. And I did not come to politics in 2011 to look the other way and play pretend when things are going wrong."

"I am not calling for confrontation. I am not calling for confrontation. I am not asking you to take to the streets because that does not have any positive result. Honduras suffered and there were deaths in 2017, when people took to the streets and absolutely nothing was achieved."

1. SOUNDBITE (SPANISH) HONDURAN PRESIDENT-ELECT, NASRY ASFURA, SAYING:
“Honduras. On Christmas Eve, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, whose arrival reminds us that love is more powerful than any division. May this Christmas find us more humane and more brotherly. This is a time for reconciliation, unity, and peace. We must recognize ourselves for what we are: one Honduran family. Today, with deep gratitude and honoured to be able to serve in this way, I extend my hand so we may walk together with firm determination to work tirelessly for Honduras. I will not fail you. God bless you, and may God bless the bountiful land where I was born."
