STORY: Activists on board the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) ship 'Handala' set sail from southern Italy for Gaza on Sunday (July 20) in an attempt to break a long-standing Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid.

The FFC is an international nonprofit organisation that says it aims to end the blockade of Gaza by sailing vessels stocked with aid to the enclave.

Several Freedom Flotilla vessels have attempted to break the blockade in the past, with some small vessels successfully making the journey in 2008 before the current war between Israel and Hamas.

More recently, a yacht organized by the coalition with several high profile activists on board, including Greta Thunberg, was seized by the Israeli Navy. Thunberg was later deported from Israel.
