STORY: At least four people were killed and over 100 injured in the Israeli coastal city of Bat Yam after an overnight Iranian missile attack, the city’s mayor said on Sunday (June 15) morning, as rescue operations continued.

“We don't have the exact number of people that are missing, but we do know that there's a lot of people that haven't been (able to) contact their loved ones yet,” Bat Yam mayor Tzvika Brot told Reuters at the site of the strike.

A spokesperson for the emergency services said earlier a missile hit an eight-story building there and while many people were rescued, there were fatalities.

Waves of Iranian attacks began shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday (2000 GMT) and continued throughout the night and early morning.

Israel's ambulance service said at least seven people were killed in total across the country overnight, including a 10-year-old boy and a woman in her 20s, and more than 140 injured in multiple attacks. It was unclear how many buildings were hit overnight.

“We have four dead (up until) til now. Hopefully that will stay that way. More than 100 wounded, four of them critical. And we don't have the exact, exact number of people that are missing, but we do know that there's a lot of people that haven't been (able to) contact their loved ones yet, so now we are focusing on looking for them. Hopefully this number will not rise.”

“I think that mainly what we see here now, is a lot of damage that we are trying to do and maintain. And we have a family centre that we opened not far from here in order to help the families that may be looking for their loved ones, and to make sure that everybody will have a place to stay later on today. We are talking about more than 100 families that have no place to stay at this time.”

“What I can tell you at this time is it's believed that there are still missing individuals and that’s why our first responders are working together with other agencies to identify and to rescue anyone who still might be under here.”

“Our bomb squads have been here from the very beginning. The last couple of days, we've been planning exactly for this, how we can best respond together with other agencies in coordination. We ask the public, do not come close to these sites. They're not safe at the moment. And you guys are bothering the first responders who are trying very hard to rescue our loved ones to medically evacuate them.”
