Sicily's Mount Etna emitted large clouds of ashes on Sunday (July 5), thereby continuing its activity for the ninth consecutive day.

Eruptions had begun on June 26 from a vent around 3,030 metres above sea level, causing a lava flow to move downhill, accompanied by volcanic tremors.

The volcano is the largest active volcano in Europe, standing at about 3,300 meters, and erupted on Thursday (July 2), colouring the night sky over Italy's largest island red.

The Italian Department of Civil Protection issued a red alert, which is a precautionary measure to strengthen monitoring systems and mitigate risks at high altitudes.
