D029-ITALIA INCENDIO FORESTAL
Rescue teams on Sunday (August 10) were still working to extinguish the wildfire that has been affecting Italy's Vesuvius National park for days.
The fire broke out on Friday (August 8) in the forested area of Terzigno, a small town located on the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius.
On Saturday (August 9), the Italian government ordered the extraordinary mobilisation of the national Civil Protection service at the request of the Campania Region, to provide support from other regions of the country.
Aircraft resumed flying over the area at dawn on Sunday, while ground crews worked through the night.
The mayor of Terzigno, Francesco Ranieri, told local media that the situation was "slightly improving," adding that last night was better than the previous one, when the flames had come within a few kilometres of homes.
Besides extinguishing the flames from the air, rescue teams are working on the ground to clear the area and prevent the fire from reigniting.
The local prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the fire, which has already devastated hundreds of hectares of vegetation and caused damage to crops, including valuable vineyards.
According to the environmental association Legambiente, 851 fires have hit Italy since the beginning of the year, burning over 56,000 hectares of land.
