STORY: The Italian fire brigade responded on Saturday (October 11) to a fire that broke out on the roof of the Monastery of Bernaga in La Valletta Brianza, a hillside village in the northern Italian region of Lombardy.

The convent, home to around 20 cloistered nuns, became famous as the place where Carlo Acutis, who was made a saint by Pope Leo XIV last September, received his first communion back in 1998.

According to local media, none of the nuns, who had been watching the pope's prayer on television together, were seriously injured. Instead, the building and some valuable works of art were severely damaged.

Media reports suggested that the fire was caused by a short circuit in one of the nuns' cells.
