STORY: Heavy snow shrouded the White House early on Sunday (January 25) morning as a powerful winter storm swept across much of the United States.

The storm system disrupted travel nationwide, grounding thousands of flights and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of customers, according to U.S. officials.

Calling the storm "historic", President Donald Trump on Saturday (January 24) approved federal emergency disaster declarations in South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia.

Forecasters said snow, sleet and freezing rain, coupled with dangerously cold temperatures, spread across the eastern two‑thirds of the country.

Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have declared weather emergencies, the Department of Homeland Security said.
