STORY: Flash floods tore through Rajouri city in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir killing at least ten people on Sunday (July 19), local media reported.

Several more were missing. Torrential rain had swollen the Dharali river, which broke through its embankments, wrecking homes and vehicles and driving residents from the low ground.

India's weather office warned of more heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning across the federal territory.

One resident, who would not give his name, said the water had swept away everything he owned, leaving him with only the clothes he stood in. Another called for excavators to haul out vehicles trapped in the mud.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, said “the government will do everything possible” to help those affected in a post on X.

Some scientists say climate change is making Himalayan floods and landslides stronger and more frequent.
