STORY: Icebergs up to a metre-high pulled in the crowds along northern Germany's Elbe river on Saturday (January 24), in a rare phenomenon caused by ice-breakers smashing ice upstream.

According to German media, thousands of visitors have flocked to the unusual spectacle of artic-like ice blocks on the river banks in the past week.

According to German media, the icebergs formed after ice breakers clearing ice for shipping pushed the ice downstream where they accumulated at Geesthacht's Elbe barrier.

The Elbe originates in the Czech Republic before flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven.
