STORY: Pope Leo on Sunday (October 5) said he hoped that a peace plan for Gaza would soon reach the "desired results", after acknowledging the significant steps made in the negotiations to end the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Speaking during his weekly Angelus prayer, the pontiff asked all parties involved to commit to the peace process, emphasizing the urgent need to end the conflict and establish a "just and lasting peace".

He also renewed calls for a permanent ceasefire in the nearly two-year conflict and the release of hostages held in Gaza.

Leo, the first U.S. pope, who was elected by the world's cardinals in May to replace late Pope Francis has been more cautious about the Israel-Hamas conflict than his predecessor.

The pope also expressed his concern over "the rise of anti-Semitic hatred," as evidenced by the attack on Thursday (October 2) at a synagogue in Manchester, where two people were killed on Yom Kippur, the holiest day for Jews.

The pontiff also addressed his thoughts to the victims of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippines on Tuesday (September 30).
