STORY: Indonesia closed Mount Bromo national park in East Java to tourists, its operator said late on Saturday (August 8), as a wildfire expanded in the active volcano’s caldera area.

The wildfire broke out on Monday (August 3) and has burned an area of around 176 hectares (about 435 acres). It expanded from around 60 hectares (about 148 acres) on Thursday (August 6).

Authorities have not said what caused the fire. No casualties have been reported.

Handout footage from the park authority showed flames burning across the mountain's slopes after dark. Reuters was not able to confirm the exact location and date of the footage. The park operator on Saturday (August 8) said Indonesia has closed Mount Bromo national park in East Java for all tourist activities due to a wildfire. No earlier versions of the footage was found posted online before August 8.

East Java's disaster mitigation agency said authorities are using water-bombing helicopters and drones to fight the blaze.
