D007-VENECIA FESTIVAL CINE JIM JARMUSCH TRAS LEON DE ORO
U.S. indie director Jim Jarmusch unexpectedly won the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday (September 6) with "Father Mother Sister Brother," a three-part meditation on the uneasy ties between parents and their adult children.
Speaking inside Venice's Palazzo del Cinema after receiving his prize, Jarmusch said he wasn't motivated by awards but that he nonetheless appreciated the support for "hand made" independent films.
"I'm not used to being in the aquarium ... I'm kind of shy of these things. But anyway, I'm very, very appreciative."
Although his gentle comedy received largely positive reviews, it had not been a favorite for the top prize, with many critics instead tipping "The Voice of Hind Rajab", a harrowing true-life account of the killing of a five-year-old Palestinian girl during the Gaza war.
In the end, the film directed by Tunisia's Kaouther Ben Hania took the runner-up Silver Lion.
"It feels almost surreal to be dressed like this on the red carpet and talking about what is happening in Gaza," Ben Hania said.
"It's very important to have this spotlight for the movie, for Hind's story and through Hind for all Gazan children and all Gazan civilians that are suffering today, which is completely, completely insane."
Jarmusch, who was wearing a lapel pin with the word "enough", also spoke about Gaza: "It's a tragic genocide that's been unfolding, you know, in front of our eyes. And it's horrifying to me."
In other categories, Italy's Toni Servillo was named best actor for his wry portrayal of a weary president nearing the end of his mandate in "La Grazia", directed by his long-time collaborator Paolo Sorrentino.
China's Xin Zhilei won best actress for her role in "The Sun Rises On Us All," a drama directed by Cai Shangjun that delves into questions of sacrifice, guilt and unresolved feelings between estranged lovers who share a dark secret.
The best director nod went to Benny Safdie for "The Smashing Machine", which starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the role of the real-life mixed martial arts pioneer Mark Kerr.
"(Johnson) put everything he had into it, you know, and I put everything I had into it. And Mark felt that .. So we really just poured ourselves into this movie," said Safdie, who has previously co-directed films with his brother Josh.
The special jury award went to Italy's Gianfranco Rosi for his black-and-white documentary "Below the Clouds," about life in the chaotic southern city of Naples, marked by repeated earthquakes and the threat of volcanic eruptions.

"You know, I'm not one who's motivated by awards, obviously, or really none of us are. But to be honoured that way is truly appreciated. You know. Because we make these films by hand. They're hand-made films. They're very carefully made, and they're not supported by corporate studios, really. It's just our own love of cinema. So to be appreciated in this way is really very overwhelming for me. You know, I'm not used to this. I'm not used to being in the aquarium. And, you know, I'm kind of shy of these things. But anyway, I'm very, very appreciative."

"If people would be empathetic, even in small ways with one another, you can start there, you know. And also, I wanted to say that filmmaking is a very complicated language and it takes a lot, a lot of effort to appear effortless. And I had the most amazing cast and collaborators to help me learn. I'm learning how to do that each time."

"When we made this, we were trying to really get into somebody's head. We always said we want people to feel somebody else's feelings as if they're their own. And so he (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) put everything he had into it, you know, and I put everything I had into it. And Mark (Kerr) felt that, and Emily (Blunt) put everything. So we really just poured ourselves into this movie just to understand our own emotions, you know? So when people see it and then they feel something along with us, it's therapeutic in a way, you know?"

"I hope that there will still be some films to make together. I certainly did not expect, on the 7th film, to make a film with such a surprising character, and so I have to thank Paolo (Sorrentino) for that. This president (his character president Mariano De Santis) also has such originality that I believe intrigued the audience a lot."

"You should never expect an award. If they come, you have to forget about it because you cannot linger too much. I had to forget the Golden Lion, which was a huge weight at the time for me, was the first time that there was a competition, a documentary, winning. That was something I realized later on time, but it was more almost like I felt like a duty. This is like more light. A special award is exactly what this film needed."
