STORY: Russian missiles and drones struck Ukraine's Odesa region overnight, damaging residential buildings and infrastructure and injuring at least eight people early on Sunday (August 9), regional governor Oleh Kiper said.

The heaviest damage was reported in Odesa, where fires broke out in the historic city centre and several apartment buildings were damaged or partially destroyed. Video from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Odesa Region showed damage to at least one residential building and emergency crew on site.

Reuters was able to confirm the location of the emergency service's video from buildings, window panels and balcony which matched archival imagery and footage filmed by Reuters. The date was verified by local officials and Reuters coverage from the scene.

Seven of the injured were in a moderate condition and most suffered shrapnel wounds, according to local authorities. The attack also damaged energy infrastructure, causing power outages in parts of Odesa and the surrounding district, while some areas experienced disruptions to water supply and mobile communications.
