India's southern Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh states on Sunday (November 30) witnessed heavy rainfall, as Cyclone Ditwah approaches after sweeping through Sri Lanka.

Authorities directed fishermen to not venture into the sea, amid high tide and gusty winds.

An India Meteorological Department official said that 'extremely heavy rainfall' will fall in the northern Tamil Nadu coastal belt, as well as in the coastal southern Andhra Pradesh area.

Meanwhile, rescue personnel were on high alert with additional teams being deployed in flood-prone districts, said another official.

Ditwah had killed at least 153 people in neighbouring Sri Lanka earlier, authorities said, with 191 others missing and more than half a million affected nationwide.
