STORY: Oxfam denounced what it said was an unambitious G7 too concerned with pleasing U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday (June 14) with a pre-summit protest that featured giant-headed caricatures of the seven participating leaders.

On the shores of Lake Geneva near where the summit starts on Monday in Evian-les-Bains, protesters wearing big masks showed glum-faced leaders from Canada, Japan, Germany, Britain and Italy standing by as a thrilled Trump carrying a red cap shook hands with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Topics which Oxfam said were crucial including human rights and climate change were shown as tossed in the trash can.

"If in the end the G7 amounts to bowing down to Donald Trump and doing everything possible to ensure his presence while making no progress on any crucial issue, then perhaps it can even become, in a way, counterproductive," Oxfam France Director-General Cecile Duflot told Reuters at the protest.

Wars in the Middle East and Ukraine look set to dominate the summit, with host France crafting an agenda aimed at projecting unity and avoiding confrontation with Trump.

With the U.S. president struggling to end a war that has disrupted the global economy, and frustrated with European allies he deems to have failed him in the Gulf and grown over-reliant on the U.S. for their security needs, diplomats say crisis management will be the focus.

No breakthrough decisions are thus expected on key issues, which also include tackling global economic imbalances and sourcing critical minerals outside China.

"The symbolism of our action is to show the issues that have been thrown in the trash of public debate — whether it’s gender issues, development aid, humanitarian aid, or the central issue, which is climate. All of this with the heads of state of the G6 countries looking somewhat embarrassed, and Donald Trump, who, for his part, is very satisfied to be able to crush everyone and crush these issues. And we do not accept this situation. We are here to denounce it, so that at least they know and don't do it in a way that is, I would say, hidden, discreet, or under the guise of good conscience. They have a responsibility towards history, and we are here to insist on that responsibility."

"In any case, we’ve long believed that the G7 is not the right forum to make a number of decisions. But one could say, at a stretch, that since they are the richest, they might manage to reach agreement — that would already be a first step. If in the end the G7 amounts to bowing down to Donald Trump and doing everything possible to ensure his presence while making no progress on any crucial issue, then perhaps it can even become, in a way, counterproductive. And that’s why we are here. To say that there are real issues that international leaders should be taking on today and now, because they will also be accountable to history for the decisions they fail to make at this moment."

"So what seems very important to us is to remind people of the necessity of also helping civilian populations, because whatever happens, even if there is an agreement, there are today populations in Lebanon, populations in Palestine — particularly in Gaza — and populations in Iran who have been victims of a situation that is atrocious, and that absolutely must be helped and repaired."
