STORY: A bus carrying Filipino tourists headed to Munich’s Oktoberfest beer festival crashed in southern Germany early on Sunday (September 27), killing two and injuring 19 others, police said.

The Italian-registered bus with around 35 people on board was on a six-hour drive from Milan to Munich, police said, when it veered off the A96 highway shortly before 6 a.m. (0400 GMT).

“An investigation into the cause of the crash will be carried out. Notifications are also being made to the relatives of the victims,” a spokesman for Bavarian police said at the scene of the crash.

Spokesman Martin Cornils added that “in the immediate aftermath, there is naturally a phase of chaos. Personal belongings are scattered around and people are wandering through the forest. It is certainly not a pleasant scene.”

“At 5:41 this morning, an Italian bus carrying around 35 passengers, most of them of Filipino origin, was travelling from Milan to Munich’s Oktoberfest. The bus left the roadway and overturned here in the bushes.”

“We have to report two fatalities. Two people lost their lives in the accident. A total of six people were airlifted by rescue helicopter. Two others were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals. The six helicopter casualties were taken to surrounding trauma centres. Of the 22 people who initially sustained minor injuries, some were later taken to hospital, including the local hospital in Landsberg. At present, we are working on the assumption that 19 people remain hospitalised with injuries."
