In the wake of deadly rains that killed at least 37 people, local residents in southern Mexico on Saturday (October 11) cleared mud as federal authorities were dispatched to begin clean-up work and assist affected residents.

Downpours from Tropical Storms Raymond and Priscila, according to Mexican media, triggered landslides, cut power in several municipalities, and caused rivers to burst their banks.

Civil Protection said five people were killed in the coastal state of Veracruz, one in the central state of Queretaro, nine in Puebla, and 22 in Hidalgo.

In southern Veracruz, some 16,000 residents were affected, and 220 people were rescued and moved to one of 19 temporary shelters, Civil Protection said.

The Navy activated a protocol to lower water levels, and more than 20% of the electricity system has been restored.

In San Luis Potosi, some 1,000 people were evacuated as a precaution as four watercourses overflowed.

The Mexican meteorological service, Conagua, said Raymond was moving northward, with heavy rain expected in many states.

Priscila is expected to weaken to a post-tropical system, Civil Protection said.

Rainy weather is forecast for Saturday in many states, including San Luis Potosi and Veracruz.
