STORY: Oscar-nominated Karla Sofia Gascon was in Venice on Saturday (August 30) to receive the best international actress award from the Kineo Cultural Association.

In February, the Spanish actor of "Emilia Perez" fame formally apologised for past social media posts denigrating Muslims and other groups ahead of the Academy Awards, in which the film was nominated in 13 categories including her nomination for best actress.

Gascon, 53, became the first transgender person to be nominated for an acting Oscar.

In the wake of the controversy, she saw her odds of winning best leading actress plummet, with actor Mikey Madison eventually winning for "Anora" on the night.

Launched in 2002, the Kineo Award, is presented by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage in partnership with the Kineo Cultural Association.

Previous winners include Ennio Morricone, Sienna Miller, Susan Sarandon, Natalie Portman and Mads Mikkelsen.
