D005-HUNGRIA RP LUIS ENRIQUE TRAS FINAL CHAMPIONS

31 de mayo 2026 - 10:37

Budapest (Hungría)

Paris St Germain retained their Champions League title with a penalty shoot-out victory over Arsenal after a 1-1 draw in a cagey final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Saturday (May 30).

Arsenal's Gabriel blazed his penalty over the crossbar to give PSG a 4-3 victory on spot kicks.

The French champions made the worst possible start after Kai Havertz fired Arsenal into the lead in the sixth minute, lashing a rising shot past PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.

It looked like PSG would find no way through the meanest defence in Europe but Ousmane Dembele levelled from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after a foul by Cristhian Mosquera on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

A scrappy period of extra-time could not separate the sides but PSG held their nerve in the shoot-out to become the second club in the Champions League era to win the trophy in successive seasons.

3. (SOUNDBITE) (French) PSG COACH, LUIS ENRIQUE, ON BEATING ARSENAL FOR THE TITLE, SAYING:

“For us, it was tough, especially in the opening minutes. We couldn’t find spaces, and it was very difficult. I think we improved a bit in the second half, but against a team like Arsenal, who defend in a deep block, they’re very strong physically and technically, and, so, they’re difficult to overcome. We managed to draw level and after that, I think we had chances to win the match, but in the end, it was back-to-back (Champions League titles for us). It was incredible. It was very tough, but we’re very happy, and very proud of our supporters, very proud of everyone who supports the team and the club. We’re very happy and it’s time to celebrate.”

“It’s holiday time, the start of summer. Last year, we made history, we then played in the Club World Cup and it was very tough and very hard. At this time, most of our players will be joining their national teams for another top-level competition (in the FIFA World Cup), but for us, the coaching staff, we’re going to enjoy this summer. Obviously there will be time to talk about going ‘back-to-back-to-back’, as Luis Campos (PSG Football Advisor) said. We’re happy to have goals that live up to our supporters’ expectations and live up to the club and city's expectations.”

“I’m very happy. I think we deserved it. Today, neither team deserved to win this match, but if I look at the whole season and all the difficulties we’ve had in the Champions League, and with this schedule, I think we clearly deserve to win our second Champions League.”

We have already a great squad, and we need, of course, some players to change some different positions, but we are the champions of Europe the last two years. (Italian) Little by little..”
