STORY: Massive swells crashed onto the shores of Newport Beach on Saturday (September 5) as Hurricane Marie churned in the Pacific Ocean, drawing surfers and swimmers eager to take advantage of the towering waves.

According to predictions by the National Weather Service, Hurricane Marie is not expected to make landfall but its effects will be felt into next week across the Eastern Pacific, from southwest Mexico to Southern California.

The effects include rain, coastal flooding, potentially deadly rip tides, and waves of up to 10 feet crashing onto Southern California beaches.

Currently positioned off the coast of Baja California, Hurricane Marie is expected to shift northwest and move away from Southern California over the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center. Despite this, officials are urging people to steer clear of local beaches during what is typically a packed Labor Day weekend.
