D005-BRASIL COP30 MARINA SILVA
Brazil’s Environment and Climate Change Minister Marina Silva received a long applause and standing ovation from delegates on Saturday (November 22) as the COP30 climate summit concluded in Belém, Brazil.
Delegates applauded Silva after she underscored the Amazon’s central role in global climate stability, calling the rainforest “the heart of the planet.”
Earlier on, Brazil COP30 presidency pushed through a compromise climate deal on Saturday that would boost finance for poor nations coping with global warming but that omitted any mention of the fossil fuels driving it.
In securing the accord, Brazil hoped to demonstrate global unity in addressing climate change impacts even after the world's biggest historic emitter, the United States, declined to send an official delegation.
