Argentine President Javier Milei endorsed Brazilian opposition Senator Flavio Bolsonaro on Saturday (July 25) in Sao Paulo at the launch of Bolsonaro's presidential candidacy ahead of the October election.

Pre-candidate Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, was confirmed as the Liberal Party's candidate at the party's national convention, where the Argentine leader expressed his trust in Bolsonaro to join "the regional transformation," referring to the right-wing leaders who have recently won elections in Latin America.

Milei said Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversaw the trial that led to Jair Bolsonaro's conviction for attempting a coup, denied him a visit to the former president in prison, according to Brazilian media.

This is the first presidential run by the former president's eldest son. Flavio Bolsonaro was elected senator in 2018 and had served four terms as a Rio de Janeiro state deputy, according to Brazilian media.

Parties can register their candidates with the Electoral Justice until August 15, according to Brazilian media, and the electoral campaign kicks off on August 16.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva maintained his lead over Bolsonaro in a new Datafolha poll released on Friday, with 48% in a potential runoff against Bolsonaro's 43%.
