D005-BRASIL ACCIDENTE ALA DELTA
STORY: A delta-wing instructor and a U.S. tourist died on Saturday (February 21) in an accident on a Rio de Janeiro beach, according to Brazilian media.
"Our hang-gliding instructor and paragliding record holder, Rodolfo Pascoal Ladeira, and his student, Jenny Colon Rodríguez, were victims of a tragic accident during a flight," the Sao Conrado Free Flight Club shared in a post on Instagram.
According to Brazilian media reports, Pascoal was found dead while Colon, a U.S. citizen, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
The accident happened on Sao Conrado beach, in southern Rio de Janeiro.
"The causes of the accident are still being investigated, and we are awaiting the remainder of the equipment recovery so a thorough technical assessment can be carried out," the club added in its statement.
Reuters confirmed the location and date when the videos were filmed by original file metadata. The buildings, trees and utility poles which matched file and satellite imagery. The shape of the mountains matched topography mapping.
