Thousands of leaders of the left, members of social movements, human rights organisations, student unions and artist collectives took to the streets in a "March of Anger'"protest against Argentine President Javier Milei and his policies, in Buenos Aires on Saturday (September 19).

Left-wing leaders participating in the march spoke of the need to defeat Milei while his government pursues fiscal austerity measures aimed at eliminating chronic budget deficits. While such measures have led to a 2% growth in Argentina’s economy and inflation cooling sharply from triple-digit levels recorded early in Milei's administration, protesters say that many Argentines are still struggling to pay for basic amenities such as electricity and food.

Employment is another concern. Celeste Fierro, a leader of the left-wing MST party, questioned claims that employment had grown, arguing that what was actually increasing was informal work without rights, even as factories closed and workers were laid off.

Argentina will hold presidential elections in October 2027, and Milei is widely expected to seek re-election. The budget — presented as a proposal to Congress on Tuesday (September 15) — is expected to serve as the administration's final full-year fiscal plan before the vote, and is likely to operate as a roadmap for economic and political priorities heading into the campaign.
