STORY: Kyiv firefighters carried out rescue operations on Sunday (May 24) after Russia struck Ukraine's capital with a massive wave of missiles and drones, killing at least one person and injuring 21, officials said.

Firefighters used hoses to douse the flames at a damaged building, and rescue workers evacuated the wounded, footage shared by the State Emergency Services of Ukraine in Kyiv Region showed.

Reuters was able to confirm the location in the first three seconds of the footage by the building, poles, railway track, and road layout which matched with file and satellite images. The date was verified by local officials.

Explosions reverberated through the city just after 1 a.m. (2200 GMT Saturday, May 23), following a warning by Ukraine's air force on its Telegram channel that Russia might launch a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile. The air force did not respond to a request for comment on whether an Oreshnik struck any target during the attack.
