D004-PERU PROTESTA CANDIDATURA KEIKO FUJIMORI
STORY: Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Lima on Saturday (May 30) night to protest against right-wing presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, just eight days before Peru's June 7 runoff election.
The march, convened by a coalition of civic groups, student organizations, labor unions, and human rights activists, drew crowds chanting "Keiko won't make it" and carrying banners with slogans including "Keiko is chaos."
Relatives of victims of political violence from the 1980s and 1990s also joined the Saturday demonstration.
Keiko Fujimori, the eldest daughter of the late former president Alberto Fujimori, carries the weight of her family name — her father served 16 years in prison for human rights abuses.
She will seek the Peruvian presidency in a runoff for the fourth time, facing the challenge of overcoming the deep polarization that her family name generates.
Keiko Fujimori currently leads voter intentions ahead of the runoff. According to an Ipsos Peru poll conducted May 16-17 and published in local newspaper Peru 21, Fujimori is projected to secure 39% of the vote against 35% for leftist rival Roberto Sanchez.
