D004-GUINEA MUERTOS ALUD DE TIERRA
STORY: Rescue teams backed by bulldozers and Red Cross volunteers continued searching through debris in Guinea's capital, as the death toll from a devastating landslide rose to 16 after heavy overnight rains triggered the collapse of a hillside that buried homes in the Manéah district.
A Reuters witness observed Red Cross volunteers recovering a body from the rubble under army supervision, as grief-stricken residents looked on.
Among the survivors was Mory Kourouma, who received the devastating news while travelling in Guinea-Bissau.
"They called me while I was in Guinea-Bissau. They called to tell me that the courtyard had collapsed on my family," Kourouma said, standing near the excavation site. He lost seven people from his compound, including his wife, two children, his wife's younger brother, and two neighbors' children.
Guinea, like much of West Africa, faces increasingly severe flooding and landslides during the May-to-October rainy season. Rapid urbanization and inadequate drainage systems around Conakry have left many communities vulnerable to such disasters, with search operations expected to continue as authorities work to locate any remaining survivors and recover additional victims.

I saw my other child injured, I saw another who was seriously injured in the head, bleeding, but still breathing. I took him and sent him to safety. I also saw my injured wife."
