STORY: A remote camera captured the moment an erupting volcano in Hawaii knocked it out while recording on Saturday (December 6).

Lava spewed from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano on Saturday, footage from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) captured.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said sustained lava fountains of approximately 50-100 feet (15-30 meters) in height were erupting from the north vent and that the heights of the lava fountains were rapidly increasing. The eruptions were confined to the Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Located in a closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes and has been erupting intermittently since December 23, 2024.
