D004-BOLIVIA DISTURBIOS CORTE AUTOPISTA
Bolivian police and armed forces cleared part of a key highway in San Julian, in the eastern Santa Cruz region, on Saturday (June 6), after more than three weeks of blockades that had disrupted transit during a nationwide protest standoff.
Authorities said the clearance operation began at around 6 a.m. local time, when security forces removed logs, debris and other barriers from the route, allowing some stranded vehicles to continue their journeys.
At least two police officers were wounded by gunfire during the operation. Authorities said the shots came from the direction of protesters, and a video released from Bolivia's Defense Ministry and reviewed by Reuters showed two people firing rifles from the side of the blockade.
Planning Minister Oscar Mario Justiniano said police were equipped with chemical agents and protective gear and were trying to prevent clashes while also opening humanitarian corridors.
The conflict began with a workers' strike in May that escalated into highway blockades which cut off access to the neighbouring cities of La Paz and El Alto, which are home to some 2 million people.
Protesters, including labour unions and groups loyal to former leftist President Evo Morales, are demanding Paz's government roll back austerity measures and address rising living costs.
