STORY: Iranians took to the streets of Tehran on Sunday (March 1), mourning the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in U.S.-Israel airstrikes widely regarded as the most ambitious assault on Iranian targets in decades.

“We said last night until the morning, that God willing, it (the news of Khamenei's death) is a lie, unfortunately, it was the truth,” said a mourner as crowds of people converged on Tehran’s Enghlab Square.

Khamenei, aged 86, was killed on Saturday (February 28), Iranian state media announced, in air strikes by Israel and the U.S. that pulverized his central Tehran compound, after decades of efforts to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program diplomatically failed.

Iran has called the strikes unprovoked and illegal and responded with missiles fired at Israel and at least seven other countries, including Gulf states that host U.S. bases.

STORY: Thousands of tearful Iranians packed Tehran’s Enghelab square on Sunday (March 1) to mourn the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who was killed in air strikes by Israel and the U.S. a day earlier.

The attack on Saturday pulverized his central Tehran compound, ending his 36-year-rule.

Israel said on Sunday it launched another wave of attacks on Iran, while President Donald Trump warned of consequences for retaliation.
