D003-BRASIL REACCIONES ARRESTO BOLSONARO

Brasilia (Brasil)

STORY: Supporters of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro gathered in Brasilia on Saturday (November 22) evening, hours after federal police took him into custody.

Bolsonaro was detained due to being a flight risk after he took a soldering iron to his ankle monitor, ending months of house arrest as he appeals his conviction for plotting a coup.

Dozens of Bolsonaro supporters gathered on Saturday night by a sound truck outside his gated community. They sang evangelical Christian hymns as one of his sons, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro wiped away tears, standing next to a cardboard cutout of his father.

Elsewhere in the capital, opponents of Bolsonaro celebrated his detention.

A Supreme Court panel will review the detention order on Monday (November 24).

Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election to leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

"I keep trying to imagine why he would have done this (damaged the electronic ankle monitor). I think it could have been an act of desperation, maybe because... I don't know why I'm speculating here. He may have felt embarrassed in front of his relatives who came to São Paulo. His brothers."

"It was clearly not an attempt to remove that device to escape (damaging the electronic ankle monitor), given that he was being closely watched (by the Federal Police) and always knew it. It's just another narrative. Imagine if in a case like this, another confidential image leaks (of the damaged electronic ankle monitor) and we do something similar to show what is happening to my father inside his house."

"But the fact that we now have generals and colonels who have always tried to stage a coup against our young and weakened democracy in the dock is a historic moment."

"I think it's a historic milestone. I think it's very important for us to send the message that you can't do something like this and get away with it. It's completely unacceptable for someone to want to stage a coup. We have history to show what the dictatorship was like, how much we lost during that time. So there's no way there can be amnesty; he (Bolsonaro) has to pay for what he did, for sure."
