STORY: Buying food meant wading through floodwaters for Bangkok residents on Sunday (September 27) as waters receded across parts of the city following nearly 300mm (12 inches) of rain in 48 hours that flooded major roads and left vehicles partly submerged.

Residents voiced frustration over power cuts and disruptions to daily life, with some criticising weather authorities for using technical language ordinary people could not act on.

"They use bureaucratic terms that ordinary people can't relate to," said flood victim Takalak Rattanagerdmongkol, 57, who argued forecasters should give a "wider margin" so people can prepare.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said rain had eased by late Saturday (September 26), allowing authorities to accelerate draining canals and lower water levels, with flooding expected to gradually subside if no further rain fell. The BMA said it had prepared 233 temporary shelters and moved around 4,200 people to safety.

"I walked from my house, about 2-3 kilometres. The area inside is low-lying; compared to my son, the water reached up to about his neck. It rose very fast, starting on the night of the 25th. At first it wasn't very high, but that night it rose by a metre, and many people, many households, couldn't prepare in time. As for us, my income stopped because I'm a delivery rider, so I've been wading through the water to buy goods and sell them to make up for the lost income."
