Lima (Perú)

STORY: Hundreds of young Peruvians marched in Lima on Saturday (October 25), demanding justice for a slain protester and the resignation of interim President Jose Jeri.

Protesters carried cardboard coffins representing those killed in recent clashes and observed a minute of silence for Eduardo Ruiz Sanz, a rapper fatally shot during protests on October 15.

The march, joined by victims’ families and social groups, targeted media outlets and the legislative palace, with demonstrators accusing Jeri of backing controversial legislation and failing to curb police violence.

Peru has faced a sharp rise in violent crime, with homicides increasing from 676 in 2017 to 2,082 in 2024, and extortion cases surging from 2,305 in 2020 to 21,746 last year, according to fiscal data, amid ongoing debates over security and civil liberties.
