STORY: Pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with police in Rome on Saturday evening (October 4) after a demonstration against Israel's interception of an international flotilla trying to deliver aid to Gaza.

The protest started peacefully, with students, young children and senior citizens among the crowds.

As the march was ending, a small group broke away and clashed with anti-riot police. Officers used tear gas and water cannons, while some of the protesters were immobilised and detained.

Large crowds assembled in central Rome earlier on Saturday for the fourth straight day of protests in Italy after the flotilla raid.

Since Israel started blocking the flotilla late on Wednesday (October 1), protests have sprung up across Europe and in other parts of the world, but in Italy they have been a daily occurrence, and in multiple cities.
