A fast-moving brush fire grew to 1,000 acres (405 hectares) on Saturday (October 3) afternoon in the mountains northeast of Santa Clarita, California, triggering evacuation orders as firefighters fought it from the ground and the air.

Aerial footage showed thick plumes of smoke rising above burning mountain ridges while water-dropping helicopters hovered to fill up with water and then dropped it on the flames.

The fire, called the Bouquet Fire, started at about 2:30 p.m. local time (2130 GMT) near Bouquet Canyon Road and Quarry Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to authorities. Santa Clarita is about 30 miles (48 km) north of downtown Los Angeles.

Authorities ordered residents in surroundings areas to leave as the fire spread quickly across the rugged terrain.
