D002-COREA DEL NORTE BAILE ANIVERSARIO PARTIDO
STORY: Thousands of North Korean students celebrated the 81st anniversary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) with mass dance and fireworks, state media reported on Sunday (October 11).
In a video provided by the North's official news agency KCNA, which Reuters cannot independently verify, students in suits and Korean traditional clothes were seen dancing and waving North Korean flags in Kim Il Sung square on Saturday (October 10).
North Korea's ruling WPK was found in 1945 by the state's founder Kim Il Sung and now it is under the leadership of his grandson Kim Jong Un.
The anniversary celebrations came amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula since the landmines exploded on September 21 south of the Military Demarcation Line in the western sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), wounding three South Korean soldiers.
