D001-EEUU CHICAGO PROTESTA ASESINATO ICE
STORY: Protesters gathered along the road in the Chicago suburb of Franklin Park on Saturday (September 13) to protest the death of a man killed by ICE agents on Friday during a traffic stop.
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez on Friday (September 12) as officers attempted to detain him, the Department of Homeland Security and a local state representative said.
ICE officers were conducting a vehicle stop to arrest Villegas-Gonzalez when he drove his car at law enforcement officers, DHS said in a statement. An ICE officer fired at Villegas-Gonzalez after being dragged by his vehicle, according to the statement.
The officer, who was not named, was injured and in stable condition, according to DHS. It said the officer used "appropriate force" and that Villegas-Gonzalez had a history of reckless driving.
Reuters could not immediately find contact information for Villegas-Gonzalez's family.
The Mexican Consulate General said it was in touch with Villegas-Gonzalez's family and that Mexico had asked ICE for more information on the incident.
At the Saturday vigil, a protester who only gave his first name as Steve said, "This is not fair for our hard-working people, who come out here to this country to earn a living."
Waving a Mexican flag, Steve added, "We do need to tell ICE, stop scaring our people."
The Trump administration said on Monday that it launched an immigration enforcement action in Chicago and other parts of Illinois called "Operation Midway Blitz."
